Dont Be A Dumbass, Be an American

For those of you that follow my personal facebook page, you've already seen the video of hundreds of boat-owners trying to get to help the displaced people of Hurricane Harvey. (if you havent watched it here it is.) This made my heart smile. This is what being an American should ALWAYS be about.
Those from around the world have changed the way they view Americans, and as the wife of a veteran, that is absolutely heartbreaking. What happened to the Americans who thought "When the going gets tough, the tough get going?"; has that generation disappeared into the depths and the new generation adopted the mindset "when the going gets tough, screw that let someone else handle it" because unfortunately it seems to be the vast majority. This video gave me hope within the American Population. There are still Americans out there that will leave the safety of their own home to go out and help those in desperation. There are still Americans who do not lack empathy for others. These are the people who do not do things to be in the center of the limelight, these are the people who do it because it is what needs to be done. I could sit here and include multiple political debates about how Americans have become selfish, stupid, ego centered assholes, but a debate about politics will never turn a dumbass in to a caring, empathic person. Those people will never look beyond themselves. If they did they'd see a simple concept, all politcs aside.
We as Americans, need our brothers and sisters to be ok. The person next to you needs to be ok, thats what keeps us healthy, thats what keeps us sane, thats what keeps us safe. No one needs to be famous, no one needs to be rich, no one needs to be poor, we all just need to be ok. We as Americans need to make sure our FELLOW AMERICANS are ok.
If you, as a weathly, middle class or poor American are paying taxes and bitching about it or bragging that you pay your taxes so you should get blah blah blah.. Look at this perspective, Tax money goes to fund public schools, you and I are much safer if the person next to us can read; When you pay your taxes you are contributing to healthcare, you are helping prevent outbreaks of preventable diseases, and for that I thank you, because regardless if you are rich, or poor your small contribution is helping make us all ok. If we as Americans can not stand in a crowded room surrounded by fellow Americans and not feel safe we are NOT ok and that needs to change.
Heres some food for thought: When our military men and women enlist, they are doing it because they want to make sure everyone is ok. When they are in battle they are making sure everyone around them is ok. The purpose of the battle is to make sure the people we are fightin for are ok! (keep your politics out of it ). When a military member is in battle they are trained to make sure the person next to them is ok, because if that person is not ok their safety is at risk. Why aren't Americans doing the same on our own soil. Instead we see protests and tragedy, natural disasters, mass killings and sit back and pass the blame onto politics or laws or a different race or even mental health how dumbass is that? Now, lets stop being dumbasses and think, if every single one of us makes sure just one person next to us was ok, would all this be happening. Have you thought, that the rich guy in line at Starbucks isnt ok even though he looks ok? Have you thought maybe the homeless person you just laughed at has the mind of Albert Einstein and just needs a step up to invent something that could change our world? At one point in our history we were the place you went to fulfill your dreams and become successful. We stood tall, we stood proud and we were envied. It is unforunate that now a vast majority of us think just because we were born here that were on a pedestal, or just because we are white we are entitled to it or because we are black we deserve justification. Look beyond yourself because thats what our ancestors did and they were doing much better then we are now. Be that person who buys the next person in line a coffee, or the person who smiles at a grumpy old man. Hold the door for someone, say please, and thank you, if you have the means to help, help. If you dont have the means to help just keep making sure your ok, because if your ok, I'm ok.
The purpose of this blog isnt to tell everyone to volunteer, send money or buy things for others because the American Economy is set up that if you are paying taxes you are helping because thats what Americans do, so stop bitching, stop bragging and just do it.
The purpose of this post was and will always be simple. Don't be a Dumbass, Be American. If you dont know what being American is, you can start by making sure your neighbor is ok, visit your grandparents and make sure they're ok, or simply continuing to pay taxes without bitching or bragging regardless of the rate and let that be your contribution. However "let your self feel pride but always stay humble and kind"
Dont ever forget it.
